King of Swords – A Court Card

The price of success; the cruel logic of revolution; despotism

Page 95

Description: A solider has won his battles. He stands by the crown and executioner’s block.

Interpretation: Here’s Oliver Cromwell, who ended up toppling the king and ruling England as monarch in all but name. Behind his the block on which he had Charles 1 executed. Between his feet is the crown. He’s won! So why’s he looking so rueful?

In the distance we see a bucking horse, the same horse that threw the Knight of Swords from his saddle. Ah, so the Knight was Cromwell! Well now the battle’s over. He’s got what he wanted and now he must live by the consequences. In Cromwell’s case, he ended up becoming a killer and the very kind of despot that he fought against in the first place. He should have read Shakespeare: “{Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.”

The card is a warning then to be careful what you wish for. You may have good, reasonable cause—yet there’ll be consequences that could strip you of the happiness you hoped for. The chopping block indicates that they’ll be bloody. Cromwell could have stayed home on his farm. We probably wouldn’t remember him, but he might have had a longer, easier, and happier life. He might have died with his conscience clear.

Reading: Be careful what you wish for. It’s much harder being a king than it looks.

Love

The High Priestess – 2 Major Arcana

Dreams; psychic powers; mythos

 Page 24

Description: An older woman plunges her hands into a river. The light of the nearly full moon is reflected in the water. A Younger woman rises up from the depths.

Interpretation: Have you ever been stopped in your tracks by the moon? The feeling is one of enchantment, as if the veils that separate the worlds have been lifted momentarily. One may feel a strong urge to curtsy or bow. The High Priestess embodies that feeling. If the Magician is all about craft, then the High Priestess speaks of intuition, of dream, and the possibility of psychic powers. If the Magician represents logos, the power of the word, then the High Priestess represents mythos, the stuff beyond words. When we stumble across the High Priestess, the hair on our neck stands up and we are stopped in our tracks.

The writer Robert Graves was a lover of mythos. He always bowed nine times to the new moon, while turning a silver coin. He gave us the idea that ancient cultures had worshipped a triple moon goddess: Maiden, Mother, and Crone. We see all three here. The Crone plunges her hands into a reflection of the nearly full moon (the Mother), and is met by the Maiden, who raises up from the water, as if to kiss her. The river is the Thames, chosen not just because it is the most characteristic of English rivers, but because in Oxford the Thames is called the Isis. Isis, the Graeco-Egyptian lunar goddess, is the deity most associated with the High Priestess.

Reading: The High Priestess invites us to pay attention to mythos. Perhaps the answer to your question will come in dreams or the ink-black surface of a scrying bowl.

Health

The Devil – 15 Major Arcana

The shadow; your nemesis

Pages 50 and 51

Description: The Devil stands on the edge of a cliff, under the light of the full moon. A naked couple are walking helplessly towards him.

Interpretation: People dread the Devil, and not without good reason. Two thousand years of Christianity have enshrined him as the epitome of evil. Just look at the couple coming over the hill. Their night of illicit pleasure has turned into a 1970s folk horror movie. The Devil is drawing them inexorably towards their terrible end.

However, it’s silly to suppose evil comes from anywhere but from inside us. The devil represents all our uncomfortable feelings, the ones the evoke guilt and anger, secret and narcissistic fantasies. He’s our shadow side. No wonder we externalize him. It’s so much easier to blame someone else for our discomfort, to drive the scapegoat from the village. Trouble is, when we do, we find we’re still dangling from the devil’s puppet strings.

In narrative times, the devil is there to test us. Every thesis needs its antithesis. Every hero needs a villain. Where would James Bond be without Ernst Stavro Blofeld? Batman without the Joker? Luke without Darth Vader? The devil is the adversary we have to best, the obstacle we have to overcome. Is he dangerous? Damn right! Adventure means nothing if it isn’t risky. But we overcome him by trying not to banish him, but by bring him into the clear light of day.

Reading: The Devil indicates a challenge, an obstacle to be overcome. That might be an external obstacle, a person standing in your way for example, or it might mean some part of yourself that you’re refusing to acknowledge.

Wealth

Temperance – 14 Major Arcana

Stillness; balance

Pages 48 and 49

Description: A woman dips her head into a pool. She’s framed by two willow trees. She holds two cups behind her back and pours liquid from one to the other. A big cat stands on a tumulus behind her.

Interpretation: Here, everything is in balance. The willow trees show summer and winter in perfect equipoise. The woman is lightly balanced between earth and water, all the while performing some extraordinary feat of juggling behind her back. Is that cloth pouring from her cups, or water? Blood, even? She doesn’t spill a single drop. You can imagine the contents running back and forth from one to the other eternally.

One of the four, medieval cardinal virtues, Temperance has had something of bad press late. Oscar Wilde famously quipped, “Everything in moderation, including moderation.” When I think of temperance, I imagine self-righteous Sunday morning moralizers wagging a finger at our Saturday night misdemeanors, or of a sweaty Sergeant Howie in The Wicker Man, slapping the wall, as he desperately attempts to reign in his cardinal desires. If only he hadn’t. Yet the moderation depicted here is effortless, requiring neither self-flagellation nor self-congratulation. It speaks of a much easier kind of balance, the balance on which the universe rests.

All extremes flow into each other. Star are born and die. Summer becomes winter becomes summer again. Full becomes empty. The wheel turns. Accept this simple truth and nothing can knock you from your feet.

Reading: Temperance encourages us to find balance in our lives, the still waters of this place. If reversed, things have become out of balanced, perhaps dangerously so. Let the governing tides of the universe draw things back to equilibrium again.

The Moon

Relying on old ways of doing things could impede your success if you do not handle the moon’s intuitive energy properly.

Drawing the Moon Stone suggests wisdom gained through experience of memory, but does not mean you should stay in a rut or stick to the kinds of habits that only forfeit your success.

The idea of family, home and ancestors is important now. Such memories may well be the key you need to unlock a certain puzzle that is troubling you.

Drawing the Moon Stone says that there will be a
sudden shift in the circumstances surrounding the immediate question. Bide your time before initiating any kind of action.

Now is the time to pay attention to your dreams.

Ogham

From Ogham Symbol Gallery

Amhancholl

Ae (sometimes represented as X or Xi), is Amhancholl or Eamhancholl, associated with Witch Hazel. This natural astringent is purifying and cleansing. The word Eamhancholl literally translates to “twin of Hazel”, so there is a strong connection to C–Coll in the Ogham. When Amhancholl appears, it’s usually an indicator that cleansing and purification is necessary or has taken place.

From a purely medicinal standpoint, Witch Hazel has long been used as a cleanser and astringent. Native American tribes turned it into a poultice which was used to treat swelling and tumors. Amongst the early settlers, midwives arriving in the New World found that it could be used to prevent sepsis following childbirth or an abortion. Today, it’s still in use as a treatment for skin inflammations, such as insect bites, mild burns, and even hemorrhoids.

Amhancholl Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: When this symbol appears, it means it’s time for a cleansing. Sometimes this is a physical cleansing of our Self, but often it applies to emotional clutter and baggage. Smudge your home, get rid of all the negative energies around you, and allow yourself to purify both your body and your mind.

Magical Aspects: This is a good indicator that you need to do a re-evaluation of your spiritual life. Are you studying things that no longer interest you? Are you hanging on to books or other magical items that you know you’ll never need–or worse, that you really dislike? If you’re feeling stagnant, or that you’re drifting a bit on a spiritual level, when this symbol appears it probably means you need to rethink your priorities. What are your spiritual goals? Do a cleansing ritual, and help yourself begin anew.

Numerology Number

From NUMEROLOGY SINGLE DIGIT NUMBERS

Among the nine single-digit numbers, the 1 holds a special place in numerology.

The Numerology Meaning of the Number 1: THE PRIMAL FORCE

From a spiritual perspective, the 1 is the number of creation – the primal force from which all other numbers spring forth. Some say once you truly understand the place and function of this elemental number, enlightenment will be yours.

This statement doesn’t apply to a Numerologist’s perspective alone, but perhaps it’s a good place to start since the personality of the number 1 aligns nicely with its elevated spiritual symbolism.

The 1 is a doer, a powerful force that produces results.

The 1 is aggressive – a necessary trait for creating, and not allowing anything to limit its potential. The 1 is the spearhead, always in the forefront directing and leading others.

The shape of this number reflects its meaning; the 1 walks upright with pride and purpose – strong, determined, and unwavering with a specific goal in mind. The 1 is capable of turning ideas into reality – pushing obstacles aside or simply drilling right through them.

The 1 tends to have a simple, straightforward view of life, heedless of its many complexities.

An individual with the dynamic 1 trusts their ability to separate right from wrong, doesn’t waste time on abstract ideas, and rarely follows a path that isn’t in line with their result-oriented goal. The 1 is no preacher, no philosopher, spiritual explorer, nor dreamer – and certainly not an idealist. They are pragmatic, ruthless conquerors, and warriors extraordinaire. The 1 is individualistic and independent to a fault. They will attempt to force their viewpoint on you but have no desire to hear yours.

The 1 can be confrontational, jealous, and exceedingly stubborn, but also courageous and willing to try anything new (with promise) even at great risk. They have a sense of honor and responsibility that demands respect and are the first to defend injustice and hypocrisy.

Befriend a 1 and you have a friend for life.

Fortunately, the 1 has a great capacity for humor, often self-depreciating, so you can poke fun at your friend and not worry about hurt feelings. But don’t cater to them to win love or friendship or you will lose their respect. Stand up to a 1 and you may lose the fight, but you’ll gain admiration. Working for a 1 you will be pushed to the limit, abused at all hours, and incapable of living up to unreasonable expectations. But you will also become the best you can be.

When in trouble, you want a friend with a strong 1 on your side, and you won’t find a braver partner or a more dedicated protector. But, if the 1 is your enemy, you could be crushed without mercy. And be forewarned, the number 1 is the most difficult of all lovers, demanding, jealous, confrontational, and impatient.

If you have a 1 in your core numbers, your happiness and sense of satisfaction will come from your work more than any other source.

Roadrunner

“Keep your sense of humor, and don’t take things so seriously”

Pages 102 to 104

It’s so tempting to view life in all of its many manifestations, permutations, and variations as something to be taken quite seriously, yet this is exactly the opposite of what you need to do right now. No matter what the situation, look for the humor in it. It may take time to find something, but if you look for it with this attitude in mind, you begin to see the absurdities and ironies inherent in whatever shows up in life, even in the darkest circumstances. Maintaining a healthy sense of humor about most experiences causes you to be lighter in spirit, to smile unabashedly, and to appreciate life that much more. Turn that scowl upside down by doing what makes you openly laugh.

Of course there are certainly times that require a more serious demeanor. Tragedies or traumatic experiences don’t call for cheerfulness and humor. When events occur, appropriate social restrictions apply that demand the expression of emotions congruent with the circumstances. However, these instances are temporary and all like things, will soon pass. Other than these kinds of situations, life’s ironies and absurdities abound. Rather than feeling personally victimized by these vagaries take a deep breath, see the humor in the situation, and have a laugh!

Weekly Horoscope Sunday, June 13, to Saturday, June 19, 2021

All Signs

Saturn makes a harsh pass at Uranus this week, which could bring upsets to material wealth. (Ouch.) Meanwhile, the last time Mars was in Leo was two years ago in July/August 2019. Being an energy planet, Mars will pump your ego and energize the Fire signs for the next two months — Aries, Leo and Sagittarius (plus Gemini and Libra cuz they’re buddies). Meanwhile, Mercury retrograde continues until June 22. (Note: If buying ground transportation, computers and cell phones, wait until July 8, when the shadow is gone.) On the upside, Mercury retrograde will help you finish old business. Nevertheless, Mars will give you the energy to put the PRO back in procrastination! A cruel hoax? Indeed!

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Expect a surprise from a friend or a group this week. (This surprise could impact your finances.) Meanwhile, because of the frustrations of Mercury retrograde, be smart and allow extra time for everything, especially when you leave your home. This is because your daily travel will incur delays. Arrrg! Flat tires, missed buses, car problems, truck problems, bike problems – you name it. In turn, this will trigger missed appointments and embarrassing delays along with mixed-up communications and forgetfulness. Fortunately, things at home are warm and supportive. In the next two months, Mars will make you playful and supportive. It will boost romance and encourage socializing (and possibly conflict with your kids.) Nothing’s perfect.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Something sudden and unexpected might create obstacles for you at this time. It could relate to the government or rules and regulations. It could be surprising news from a boss or a parent. A sudden change in the role of authority? You might have to step in to do some damage control. Meanwhile, financial delays are frustrating along with cheques that are late in the mail. On top of this, your home scene continues to be full of confusion, increased activity and chaos. Oy! It’s time for a quality Pinot Noir with a nice triple brie. Fortunately, amidst all this, you are charming and delightful. Hats off to you!

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Plans related to higher education, future travel or something to do with publishing, the media, the law or medicine might suddenly change. This could catch you off guard. If so, you will be vocal and proactive about this because Mars is in your House of Communications. Fortunately, the Sun in your sign will empower you. Admittedly, your ruler Mercury is retrograde and that is a bit maddening because this creates mistakes, confusion, errors and misplaced items plus delays. However, there is always some good news. Venus will attract money to you. Oh yes. That’s why you will buy beautiful things for yourself and loved ones, which is a sweet bonus.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

In a way, you’re waiting in the wings before your birthday arrives. This means that you are prefer to play things low-key. Of course, fair Venus in your sign encourages socializing and warm times spent with others. This is also a great week to buy wardrobe items for yourself. Make a note of that. (Especially because you are spending money!) Nevertheless, a sudden change to something to do with taxes, inheritances, shared property might impact your wealth. Do be aware of this. This could be good news or bad news. But it is likely unexpected. Whatever happens, it’s a fact that you are having a successful year in 2022, so this sudden impact to your assets won’t hold you back.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Mars is in your sign, you’re energetic and feisty! Furthermore, the Sun and Mercury retrograde are bringing opportunities to socialize with friends, especially people from the past. Your hidden Venus will attract opportunities for secret love affairs. (Oh yes.) However, something unexpected and powerful might impact a close friendship or a partnership. For some of you, a partnership might end. Perhaps a sudden shift will take place in a close relationship? For others, someone unusual, different and new will enter your world. It’s not a boring week. Extend your friendship to others because they will welcome seeing you.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You continue to be high viz., which means that people notice you more than usual. But more than that – they admire you! (Obviously, this week is an excellent time to advance your agenda or make your pitch.) Venus will promote warmer relations with others – friends and members of groups. In fact, a friend could become a lover. Something unexpected will impact your work scene. It could be sudden and create a big change. (Yikes!) Your job might end or change in a dramatic way. This unexpected news might also be something related to your health or a pet. Go slowly so that you are prepared for the unexpected. Pull your act together to stay in control.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You continue to make a fabulous impression on others because your ruler, fair Venus is at the top of your chart. This makes you look attractive to everyone! It also makes you look like you know something about design, layout and that you have good artistic judgment, which most of you do. Your urge to travel and do something different to inject some excitement into your life is still strong. Get out and do anything that gives you a thrill and makes you feel like you’re living! Parents should be careful and vigilant with their kids because accidents or something unexpected could impact your kids. There might even be a family intervention? A vacation might be cancelled. Sports accidents are also possible. Tread carefully. Remember – the future unfolds one day at a time.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You are determined to achieve your goals now. In fact, a number of things have come together that makes you ambitious in a happy, optimistic way. Travel for pleasure will also appeal if this is possible. Romance with someone different might also be in the picture. What cannot be ignored however, is that something very basic and possibly literally to do with the physical structure of your home will suddenly occur this week. It’s unexpected and it affects home and family. It could be related to your physical residence. It might also apply to an older family member. Whatever it is, it will shake things up and require your attention. Steady as she goes.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

First off, let us remember that you need more sleep this week. Definitely. (You work hard and party hard.) You love to travel and this week, you might have a chance to do so because you certainly are pushing the sides of the envelope to explore new ideas, see new places and meet new people. Quite possibly, money, gifts and goodies will come to you – so be receptive to this. Don’t be afraid to attract generosity. Keep your pockets open. Romance is certainly passionate! (That’s a given.) However, please pay attention to everything you say and do because this is an accident-prone time for you. Something unusual will interrupt your daily routine.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You are in work mode – no question. Therefore, get as much done as you possibly can this week. Admittedly, Mercury retrograde is in this part of your chart, so you will suffer from delays and goofy mistakes and misplaced or broken equipment. Fortunately, your close relationships are excellent at this time. (And your sex drive is amped!) It’s good to have this wonderful support because something unexpected will impact your earnings or your wealth this week. It could be good; it could be bad. A sudden influence might bring loss, damage or theft to your possessions. Alternatively, you might suddenly acquire something you least expected to get! Stay alert and guard what you own.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This fabulous, playful planetary influence continues this week. Lucky you! Accept all invitations to party and enjoy sports events plus creative activities with kids. Relations with coworkers are splendid. The only fly in the ointment is that you might feel annoyed with a partner or close friend because of some kind of tension building up between you. (Patience is your best ally.) Midst all of these wonderful influences, nevertheless, you feel caught off guard by something unusual this week. It might make you feel rebellious. You will want to protect your independence. You might even lash out in a sudden unexpected way. Basically, this could mean a sudden break with a person, a friendship, a partnership or a particular situation. If so, this could be freedom from something that was previously oppressive.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Home, family and your private life continue to be your primary focus, especially because many of you have been revisiting past issues with family members. Or perhaps, relatives are camped on your doorstep eating out of your fridge. (It was ever thus.) Fortunately, you are charged up to work and be as productive as possible. Nevertheless, Venus will encourage you to party and have good times, while lucky Jupiter in your sign will basically encourage good fortune in your life. However, something going on behind the scenes will be disruptive this week. It could be that there was an unconscious need for change in your life and now it’s occurring in an upsetting way. Hopefully, you will become free of something that you’ve been putting up with for too long.

Weekly Horoscope Sunday, June 6, to Saturday, June 12, 2021

All Signs

Mars is an energy planet. It visits one sign for seven weeks every two years. According to the sign it is in, it will be in a different part of your chart and affect you in different ways. (There will be a pop quiz on this next Tuesday.) This week Mars moves into Leo, which is exciting news! It’s summer, and in most areas, Covid restrictions are relaxing. This means we want to party! We want to barbecue! We want to enjoy sports, social outings, the arts and fun times with kids. (The freedom is dizzying!) Think haircuts, manipeds and restaurant patio dinners with a real server. Hot air balloons! Close dancing! Oh yeah! Put on your pants and brush the back of your hair. “Table for six?”

Aries (March 21-April 19)

There are three Fire signs and you are one of them. This week Mars moves one of those Fire signs. (They are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.) When Mars is in one of them, it supports you like the third leg of a three-legged stool. Since Mars is an energy planet, this means for the next seven weeks, your energy will be high! Your self-confidence will be strong. You will be more effective and more competent in everything you do. Because this Fire sign is Leo, it means a very playful part of your chart is energized! Romance will blossom! Your interest in sports (especially competitive) will be strong. You will do exactly what you want to do.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

When Mars changes signs this week, it means your home, family and private life will be energized. At a glance, this looks good. It means you have more determination to deal with your domestic world. But this increased energy will also create chaos and confusion at home. Visiting guests, renovations, residential moves will be a challenge! In fact, these challenges by extension, could create tension within the family, especially with a parent. Domestic strife is classic when Mars is in this part of your chart. The thing to keep in mind is that this is a short-term. In about seven weeks, Mars will move on to energize the most playful, fun-loving part of your chart. Until then — patience.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

The Sun is still in your sign with Mercury retrograde, which lasts until June 22. This is why you are misplacing things and making goofy mistakes! (However, if you’re buying a Mercury-related item like a computer, car or cell phone, wait until the shadow of Mercury retrograde is gone, which is July 8.) Meanwhile, this week fiery Mars moves into the part of your chart that deals with your daily activities and your style of communicating to others. This means that for the next two months, the pace of your days will accelerate and you will be much more forthright and proactive when talking to others. In other words, you will say what you mean and mean what you say!

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This continues to be a time when you’re happy to hide in the wings. Nevertheless, Venus in your sign will encourage you to socialize with others. And why not? Venus makes you charming and diplomatic! (Kiss, kiss, hug, hug.) New flash: This week is a lovely time to shop for wardrobe goodies for yourself. A summer dress? Strappy sandals? Cargo shorts? This week is also when fiery Mars moves into your Money House encouraging you to work hard to make money; and at the same time, spend money! In particular, you will be happy to use your possessions to get something done. Of course! (The reverse is such a waste.)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Things are certainly looking up for your sign because this week, fiery Mars is moving into Leo! (The last time it was in Leo was in July-August 2019.) When Mars is in your sign, it denotes great activity in your life. It promotes your desire to work hard and further your own interests. It also gives you the energy to work hard to follow through on your desires. It makes you much more of a fighter for your own rights than usual, as well as the rights of others. Your physical energy will be high and you will accomplish a great deal. The only downside is you might come on too strong for others. If you see the hair blowing back over their ears – that’s a sign. Be nice to the little people.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You continue to make a fabulous impression on others because the Sun is at the top of your chart casting you in a flattering spotlight. Meanwhile Venus encourages warm bonding with friends and groups. Everyone loves you! This week, Mars moves into a hidden part of your chart, which is tricky. Someone out there might not have your best interests at heart. (This might or might not happen.) But it is a warning. So, if you think something fishy is going on – it is! Meanwhile, in this hidden position, Mars can easily make you give others the wrong impression, which undermines your position. (“Did I just say that?”) Therefore, be mindful of everything you say and do. Use your personal editor.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Things are going swimmingly because your ruler Venus is at the top of your chart making you look fabulous to everyone. People will seek your advice about artistic matters or how to make something look better. Romance with a boss or someone in authority might occur. Meanwhile, you’re excited about travel or the possibility of doing something “different.” Do note that fiery Mars is entering your House of Friendships this week to stay for seven weeks, which encourages physical activities with friends, especially athletics, and it makes you competitive. You will refuse to take a backseat position. You will also resent group pressure. Coordinate your needs with the needs of others for a win-win solution.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You have a growing desire to travel and explore new places, new ideas and learn new things. You will also have an excellent opportunity to wrap up old business with insurance issues, taxes, inheritances and shared property. This week, fiery Mars moves to the very top of your chart, which will definitely arouse your ambition. It will stay there for the next seven weeks, which will make you identify with whatever project you’re doing, which in turn, is why you will work extremely hard to get it done! The only downside is that conflict with coworkers might arise because they feel threatened by your hard work and energy. (You also might be a tad bossy.) “Moi?” “Yes, you.”

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Like Aries and the principle of a three-legged stool, you benefit by Mars moving into your fellow Fire sign this week. Mars is an energy planet and it will give you more support in everything that you do, especially if it requires physical energy. This is why you will enjoy increased self-confidence; enthusiasm and feel more competent and more effective. You will be clear about your intentions and know exactly what course you want to follow. Mars will also boost your sex drive! (Well, Mars boosts everything.) As the traveller of the zodiac, you’ll be delighted to hear that Mars will spur your desire to travel and explore the world. Oh yes, you want it all – first-class.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You like efficiency and production, which is why you’re happy to work hard. However, you are frustrated by the delays, confused communications, missed appointments, late deliveries and minor moments of mayhem in your job due to Mercury retrograde. Please remember: Mercury retrograde will help you finish old business, so, you can use this to your advantage! Venus opposite your sign beautifully promotes warm relations with those closest to you. This week, Mars moves into one of your Money Houses indicating potential disputes about inheritances, shared property, taxes, debt and insurance issues. Arrg. These will be ego conflicts. Be smart. Think of your long-term objective.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This week is lighthearted and playful! You will enjoy social outings and fun activities with children. Old flames from the past might be in touch. Accept all invitations to have a good time because this is totally appropriate. Relations with coworkers are warm, which is rewarding. However, this week, fiery Mars moves opposite your sign where it will stay for several weeks making relations with those who are closest to you contentious. Disputes with partners and close friends might arise. Basically, these are probably power struggles. The upside is you now have the courage to speak up for yourself and tell your truth. That’s important.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Home, family and your private life continue to be important. Mercury retrograde will recycle past issues that you dealt with at home. “Not this, again!” On the upside, Mercury retrograde will help you finish home projects. Meanwhile, lucky Jupiter and fair Venus want you to party! Both these planets will also promote new love, and enhance existing partnerships. In the midst of this encouraging news, this week, fiery Mars moves into the part of your chart concerning your job, your health and your pet. This means you will work efficiently with perseverance at whatever task you’re doing. Your health will also be invigorated. (A pet might require your attention.) And so it is.

Weekly Horoscope Sunday, May 23, to Saturday, May 29 2021

All Signs

And the beat goes on. We have all been feeling the effects of Mercury retrograde; however, this week, Mercury Retrograde officially begins (yes, folks – it’s official) So, what’s the overview for this week? How is this Gemini Sun affecting us? How is Mercury Retrograde (also in Gemini) creating havoc? And what’s up with Mars? And who is that man behind the curtain? The thing to remember about Mercury Retrograde is that as annoying as it can be, it deals with small stuff. Yes, I know that a flat tire or a computer problem doesn’t feel “small”, but it’s not a hurricane. These are niggling frustrations that we can handle. What’s not to handle? “Remember when there were two Scott the Plumbers and then they both moved away at the same time?” That’s major.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This is a busy fast-paced week. Relations with siblings, relatives and neighbours will be warm and cozy, which is nice. (Plus, it makes life easier.) Nevertheless, Mercury Retrograde will threaten transportation issues. (Aaggh.) Expect missed buses, car problems, truck mishaps, flat tires and unexpected repairs to ground transportation, including bikes. (This is a heavy cross to bear but not as heavy as when both plumbers leave town.) Also, increased chaos and activity on the home front will be maddening and require patience with family members. Reward yourself with some fun socializing, if you can do this safely. This week, your ability to work effectively with everyone will contribute to your productivity.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This week you will be busy socializing with friends and groups – no question. Furthermore, you will be proactive in all your communications with others. You won’t hesitate to say what you mean and mean what you say! Meanwhile, the Full Moon on Wednesday might bring financial matters to a head, especially related to the wealth of your partner or something to do with loans and mortgages. Fortunately, because you are the financial wizard of the zodiac, you will work things out in your favour. Nevertheless, cheques in the mail will be late and goofy, financial delays will be frustrating. Having said that, Venus in your House of Earnings will attract money to you. Yay!

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This is a happening week! The Sun, Mercury retrograde and Venus are all in your sign; and on Wednesday, the only Full Moon directly opposite your sign all year will take place. Yikes! (What do you wear to a midlife crisis?) Tension with a partner or close friend might take place. Possibly due to the fact that ex-partners and old friends are back in the picture? Could jealousy be a factor? (“It’s complicated.”) Fortunately, both the Sun and Venus will empower you and make you confident, charming and diplomatic. In addition, Jupiter at the top of your chart makes your reputation shine! This means whatever happens, you will come out smelling like a rose. No worries.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

You are pulled in several directions this week. Part of you wants to hide and keep a low profile, especially because some kind of hidden activity (or a hidden relationship) is going on and you might want to avoid the fallout. Nevertheless, Mars in your sign makes you confident, proactive and ready to jump on anything with both feet. “I’m on it!” Actually, it might be a good idea to use physical exercise to blow off any pent-up steam that could be building up within you. Midweek, the Full Moon could bring a health situation to a head or something to do with your job or a pet. After the Full Moon is over, especially by the end of the week, these problems will dissipate or disappear. (Disappear is nice.)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a popular week and you are more involved than usual with creative, artistic people, which you adore. You might hear from old friends or members of groups from the past because of Mercury retrograde. Meanwhile, you might be unsure of future goals. By early July, you’ll have a better idea of what you really want to do. Why not let those plans simmer on the back burner of your mind? Issues related to your kids or a romantic partner might be tough to deal with midweek. Fear not because after the Full Moon peaks, by Friday or the weekend, everything is copacetic. Note: At the beginning of this week, it will serve you well to be generous to others.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You are high viz. this week, making a great impression on everyone. In fact, you make such a great impression on bosses and important people, you might begin a romance with someone. It’s time to revisit old issues from the past with parents or bosses you haven’t seen for a while. When it comes to dealing with friends and groups, you’ll be enthusiastic, possibly even competitive. The Full Moon on Wednesday will challenge you because despite the demands of your job or your career, a family member will also make demands on your time. You’re caught in the middle! Cope as best you can, but don’t ignore career. Not this week.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You want to travel and do something different and exciting! Naturally, most of you cannot do this because of Covid restrictions. This means you have to figure out another way to get the feeling that you’re being adventurous and expanding your world. Not easy to do. But you can learn new things and study something new because that can be exciting. You might also have a formal dinner with your family or do something “different” that makes you feel turned on and energized by life. You might “go out for dinner” or “have a drink” in a classy way at home? All things are possible. The trick is to satisfy the urge in your mind, not your body. Guard against accidents midweek. Pay attention to everything you say and do.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Money, loans and mortgages as well as anything to do with shared property and the responsibilities for others is a primary focus for you. In fact, the Full Moon on Wednesday will bring something to do with these these areas to a head. Hopefully, afterwards, there will be some kind of resolution or a solution in sight. Whatever comes up in the beginning of the week could create financial tension for you. Fortunately, after the Full Moon peaks, problems that were intensifying, miraculously diminish or even disappear. Work to benefit others this week, especially before Wednesday’s Full Moon. What you give will come back to you multiplied.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

The only Full Moon in your sign all year will peak on Wednesday this week. Problems seem to increase and intensify as the Full Moon approaches, and then inexplicably, after the Full Moon peaks, these same problems diminish or disappear. Some of these problems could be related to tension with partners and close friends; possibly something to do with an ex-partner or an old friend who is back on the scene? You might also have a dispute with someone about shared property or an inheritance. Whatever happens, keep the faith that by the end of the week, everything will mellow out and fall in place. Because it will.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This will be a busy week for you because you are motivated to work and to accomplish as much as you can. Admittedly, Mercury retrograde will create some hassles. Misplaced paperwork, confused communications, lost items, missed appointments and equipment problems are just some things that might dog your footsteps. Nevertheless, you are motivated and focused! Furthermore, relations with coworkers will be smooth and supportive. Having said that, be patient with partners and close friends because some tension here is likely. Problems will intensify before Wednesday’s Full Moon and then afterwards, they will diminish. You can look forward to this. Plus, your optimism is strong!

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is a playful, fun-loving week! Grab every opportunity to enjoy sports, social interactions with others (probably online) and fun activities with kids. You will also enjoy any chance to express your own creativity. Old flames are back in your world either literally or in your thoughts or in your dreams. This is due to Mercury retrograde. In fact, Mercury retrograde might encourage you to resurrect a previous creative project to either finish it or take it in a new direction. Despite your involvement with the arts and children, you are still keen to work hard. Do not let tension building up toward Wednesday’s Full Moon sideline you. Stay mellow.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a powerful week for you with lucky Jupiter in your sign. Furthermore, Mars makes you want to play and have fun! It will give you a competitive spirit in sports or any activity. Your focus on home and family will be primary, especially dealing with a parent. Many of you will be in touch with relatives you have not seen for a while. You will enjoy any kind of home entertaining or family gathering – whatever is safe and permitted. You will particularly enjoy making where you live more attractive. Wednesday’s Full Moon will make you feel pulled between the demands of your career versus the demands of home and family. This week you cannot ignore home and family and your personal life.

Weekly HoroscopeSunday, May 16, to Saturday, May 22, 2021

All Signs

We’re in the fires of Mordor! Actually, it’s Mercury Retrograde, which means you will hear from old friends, ex-partners and old flames, which is either fun or horrifying. (I once tried to hide in the aisles of a video store.) Mercury is retrograde from May 28 – June 22; but the shadow period makes it a longer time: from May 16 – July 8. Zooks! That’s today! You can use this time to wrap up old business and make insightful observations about your past. Avoid buying ground transportation, computers and cell phones. This week, the Sun moves into Gemini giving each of us a new focus for the next four weeks. Everyone will feel more curious and restless – eager for something new and interesting to happen. (Geminis don’t do boredom.) It’s time to make a cat video!

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Your sign will feel this particular Mercury Retrograde more than the other signs because Mercury Retrograde is taking place in the part of your chart that is Mercury’s home. Expect car problems and transportation delays. (Flat tires, failed engines – something.) Get ready for missed appointments and confused communications. Oy! However, you will easily finish studying or writing something. Even though you’re caught up in delays and goofy mistakes, you will enjoy life because it is fast-paced and exciting! Plus, you will appreciate the beauty of your daily surroundings and feel more warmly connected to others. Gosh.)

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Your focus on money, cash flow and movable possessions will be strong in the next four weeks. (“I can’t believe I own all this stuff.”) Something will prompt you to catalogue, organize and get rid of what you don’t need. You will also be more focused on money, cash flow and earnings. Although cheques in the mail will be late and other delays might be irksome, nevertheless, a moneymaking idea that you had in the past might be worth reconsideration? Why not run it up the flagpole to see if anyone salutes? You will attract money, goods and favours to you this month. Likewise, you will buy pretty things and antiques. (It’s who you are.)

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Oh my, the Sun, Venus and your ruler Mercury are in your sign for the next four weeks. (Venus moves into Cancer on June 2.) This means the whole world will experience a dazzling display of Gemini energy! Obviously, this is your chance to recharge your batteries for the rest of the year. It’s also why you will feel vigourous, energetic and enthused about life; while Venus will make you smooth, charming and diplomatic. Of course, Mercury Retrograde will attract friends and ex-partners back into your world. Mostly this is a good thing because it’s nice to have history with others. Enjoy this lovely boost of energy and attention!

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Your personal year is coming to an end; however, your new year is not yet ready to begin. This means the next four weeks are the perfect time to reflect. Look back over your shoulder. How well are you doing at the art of living? What changes do you want for your new year ahead? What goals do you want to make? After all, goals make future decision-making easier and they keep you on track and give you focus. This window of time will be great for doing research. Meanwhile, some of you are swept up in the throes of a secret, passionate, love affair. “Heathcliff!”

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

The next four weeks will bring a welcome change into your life because you will be more popular and more involved with younger people as well as creative, artistic types. (Just what the doctor ordered.) You will enjoy talking to groups and friends online or in person. You’ll be excited about creating new goals for the future. It’s as if you’re waking up after hibernation. “Life! I remember what that was. Yes, it’s time to live again!” Mercury retrograde will attract old friends back into your world; plus, it will help you to accomplish old goals that you never achieved or finished. Relations with friends will be cozy; in fact, a friend could become a lover. “Masks off!”

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Life will be increasingly thrilling during the next four weeks because this is the only time all year the Sun will be sitting at the very top of your chart. This means you will be thrust into the limelight! Everyone will notice you more than usual. But lo! This light is flattering. Everyone admires you especially parents, bosses and VIPs even if you don’t do anything special. (It’s smoke and mirrors.) This is why you will be asked to take on increased responsibilities, and others will come to you for your advice, especially about how to make something look better. Meanwhile, competition or increased physical activity will stir your blood! All hail the valiant Virgo!

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

The next four weeks will be like a breath of fresh air for you because you will do something to satisfy your urge for adventure, stimulation and a chance to learn something new! You will appreciate the beauty of art, architecture and the crafts of other cultures. Ideally, you would achieve these things through travel, but in these times of Covid restrictions, you probably cannot do this. This means you have to travel in other ways – through books and film. Talk to people from different cultures. You might hear from people far way because Mercury Retrograde will attract them to you. Do what you can to satisfy your love of beauty and learning. Explore new avenues in publishing, the media, medicine and the law.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You are an intense sign and in the next four weeks, your life will become even more intense. (“Her knuckles are very white.”) For starters, romance and love affairs will be passionate! The stuff of movies. This could be because ex-lovers are back on the scene. (Sigh.) Or you might meet someone new through an old friend who has returned to your world? Romantic passion aside, details about inheritances, shared property and insurance matters will be a strong focus. Fortunately, Mercury Retrograde will help you wrap up old business in these matters. You will also receive a gift, an inheritance or a favour from someone in the next month. Major bonus!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

For the next four weeks, the Sun and Mercury retrograde are sitting directly opposite your sign, which is a sure indication that you will hear from ex-partners and friends from your past. Plus, it will give you an opportunity for closure and a chance to learn more and catch up on old news. (Trade lies about the bad old days.) You might even learn more about your style of relating and your values with your closest one-to-one relationships. Meanwhile, your sex drive is amped because of the placement of Mars in your chart. However, this same placement can also indicate disputes about shared property, mortgages, inheritances, loans and debt. Overall picture: A fascinating time with others, especially people from your past.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You are hard-working. “No slackers allowed!” You like efficiency and you hate waste. These are some reasons you’ll be happier in the next four weeks. That’s because your main goal will be to get better organized. You want to work smart and be effective in everything you do. You will make lists and tackle old jobs that you’ve been meaning to get to for a while. Not only will you work to organize your world, you want to improve your health as well. “I want it all!” Coworkers will be supportive. Please note: Your ability to finish old jobs and work that has been dragging on and on will be stellar. You’ll wrap up this stuff in a flash. Show us your superpower!

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You’re entering one of the most fun-filled months of the year! Mercury Retrograde will attract old flames from your past. Meanwhile, parents might hear from kids who wandered off the block. Your personal goal will be to enjoy yourself and express your creative urges. (“Look, ma! No hands!”) Social outings, the arts, sports, playful activities with kids and the freedom to be just who you are and express yourself without fear or hesitation will be the order of the day! In a perfect world, you would go away on a vacation. With current restrictions, you will have to have a vacation the best way you can make it happen. “We’re booking male dancers and ordering a case of wine.”

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Your focus on home, family and your personal and private life will be much stronger than usual in the next four weeks. Your interaction with a parent will be significant. Furthermore, you will be in touch with relatives you have not seen or heard from in a while. If they are safely in your bubble, they’ll be perched at your place and eating out of your fridge. Some of you have a strong urge now to redecorate and make your digs look prettier. A few velvet pillows on that new sofa? Fiery Mars will urge you to be active in sports and fun athletics, especially with your kids. Despite these busy distractions, you will value quiet moments to cocoon at home, as well. Nice.

14 May Moon Goddess’ Current Phase

Today the Moon will be in a Waxing Crescent Phase. A Waxing Crescent is the first Phase after the New Moon and is a great time to see the features of the moon’s surface. During this phase the Moon can be seen in the wester sky after the sun dips below the horizon at sunset. The moon is close to the sun in the sky and mostly dark except for the right edge of the moon which becomes brighter as the days get closer to the next phase which is a First Quarter with a 50% illumination.

Visit the May 2021 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.

Today’s Waxing Crescent Phase

The Waxing Crescent on May 14 has an illumination of 6%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On May 14 the Moon is 2.42 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

Weekly Horoscope Sunday, May 2, to Saturday, May 8 2021

All Signs

This week begins with tough love because on Monday, relationships with parents and bosses are strained. We are forced to deal with balancing what “we want to do” versus what “we should do.” (I hate that.) Self- gratification versus duties and responsibilities. Oy! Things will be depressing and restrictive for many. News in the media will be bleak and we will feel the weight of the world on our shoulders. Fortunately, the rest of the week gets better and better and by Thursday, relationships are hot and sexy! And by Saturday, everyone wants to enjoy the company of old faces! “Natasha!” “Boris!” (“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”)

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Your emphasis on money, cash flow and earnings continues to be strong this week. It’s important for you to know that things are better than they actually look. You will attract money and goods to you, so keep the faith. Having said that, during the beginning of the week, you will be disappointed because you might be turned down or you might hear depressing news that impacts your earnings and spending power. Arrrg. Nevertheless, stay strong because as the week unfolds, your financial scene looks better! Therefore, cope as best you can with the chaos and increased activity on the home front. It is what it is. People will help and the cash will come. “Friendship is the bread of life but money is the honey.”

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

You continue to be empowered because it’s your turn to replenish yourself for the rest of the year. You are also attracting favours, gifts and resources to you. Admittedly, this week starts out tough. You might feel discouraged. You might wish you didn’t have to work or deal with certain people. Issues with parents and bosses will be restrictive. But lo! What news from yonder modem breaks? As your week unfolds (not unravels), your mood transforms into feelings of passion and excitement. Romance will be promising! The arts will appeal! By the end of the week, you will be happier enjoying the company of others. Websites must be scoured! Money must be spent!

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Your ruler Mercury enters your sign on Monday, which will make you more talkative and able to put a great deal of yourself into whatever you have to say. Your mind will be busy jumping from topic to topic and you will seek new, fresh experiences! Normally, Mercury is in your sign for about two weeks once a year. However, this time, Mercury will be in your sign for 11 weeks! (Whaaat?) Yes! Until Sunday July 11. The reason for this is that Mercury is going to go retrograde in your sign from May 16 to July 8. (The last time this happened was six years ago in 2015.) This is a major deal! Don’t be discouraged at the beginning of the week when life feels tough because this week gets easier and easier as it unfolds.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Your popularity with others and your interaction with groups continues to be strong; nevertheless, someone will oppose you at the beginning of the week. Whatever happens might make you feel discouraged to the point of even changing your future goals. Don’t let this get you down because these difficulties and restrictions will disappear. In fact, someone, perhaps someone creative, artistic or attractive will make things better for you. In some cases, a friend will become a lover. But all of you will feel relieved and happier because of this person. Meanwhile, you are strong and vigourous because fiery Mars is in your sign. “I can do this!”

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

You continue to garner the admiration of others because the Sun is still at the top of your chart along with Venus, which is a very favourable influence! Nevertheless, at the beginning of the week, you might be slammed by harsh news or have difficulty dealing with a parent or a boss. This might curtail your plans or create problems. Definitely a bummer. The thing to know is that this is the only tough time this week. Once you deal with this, things will get better and better, and ironically, by the end of the week, your reputation will shine! People will think so highly of you that some of you will begin a romance with your boss or someone “important.”. As for Monday? “Even a hurricane only lasts for a day.”

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a powerful time because five planets are cresting the top of your chart. You have a take-charge style dealing with others; and you’re eager to study and expand your horizons and share your idea as best you can in these times of Covid restrictions. Nevertheless, as the week begins, rules and regulations or legal matters (possibly something medical) will create difficulties or disappointments. The good news is that once you get over this initial hump, your week gets better and better. Romance with someone different might blossom. You will also have an increasing enjoyment of other cultures and their arts and crafts because you have a stronger appreciation of beauty.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

I recently read that Bruce Lee said, “Don’t speak negatively about yourself even as a joke. Your body doesn’t know the difference. Words are energy and cast spells, that’s why it’s called spelling.” Wise words! Meanwhile, you want to improve yourself; and in your desire to do so, you might be self-critical. Don’t be discouraged about your shortcomings. Cut yourself some slack. Be kind to yourself and remember that you’re doing your best – for today. This week begins with discouraging news about finances, taxes, debt or shared property. But you will handle this! As the week progresses, gifts, goodies and favours will come to you. A fabulous change!

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Many of you need more sleep this week and are focused on your closest one-to-one relationships because the Sun is opposite your sign. This happens once a year and when it does, it offers you a chance to gain greater insight into your style of relating to others. However, at the beginning of the week, you might clash with a parent or a boss. You won’t get the approval or permission you want. Your plans might be dashed. You will be discouraged. Fortunately, these feelings lessen to the point that later in the week, relations with others are excellent! This week is a true transformation in that sense. For some of you, a new, passionate romance will begin.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You still want to get better organized, become healthier and work as efficiently as possible. Noble goals! However, this Sunday or Monday, some kind of barrier might hold you back from doing what you want to do. Relations with authority figures will be testy. In addition, your energy will be low and you will feel depressed about the state of the world. More than any other sign, sometimes you need to take a news fast or a break from the media because it’s important for you to maintain your optimism about life. Speaking of which, this week gets better and by the end of the week, everything will fall in place for you.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Although this is a lighthearted time for you, at the beginning of this week, something will discourage you. It could be difficulty dealing with your kids, or a challenge to your plans for a social event or perhaps it is related to sports. For some of you, this challenge could be a disappointment with a romantic relationship. None of this sounds like fun. The important thing to know is your situation will improve rapidly this week. Trust me. Whatever difficulties you encounter at the beginning of the week soon will be history. By the end of the week, romantic relationships, relations with your kids and social plans will be exciting and promising!

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Your relationship with a parent or relations with your family will be challenging at the beginning of this week. This is almost a certainty. Maybe someone has put their foot down or shut down your ideas, which makes you feel blocked or restricted in some way? Perhaps a home project is overwhelming? Two things are going to turn this situation around for you. The placement of Mars right now gives you lots of energy to work hard him, which means you will accomplish a lot this week. Furthermore, a Venus influence will greatly ameliorate your difficulties at home and in fact, redecorating plans, real-estate plans and relations with family members will be fine! (Whew!)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

You might be worried about something this week to the point that you feel victimized. “Why me?” This is because something in your daily world will discourage you or make you feel shut out or blocked. Naturally, this will be discouraging. In truth, everyone feels a challenge at the beginning of this week. You are not alone. Don’t fall into worry mode because this difficulty is brief. Already by Thursday, things look much better! And by the weekend, you’re laughing! Continue with your ideas to improve where you live with DIY projects and home repairs. Mars will guarantee fun times with others, especially with romance and sports. It’s all good.

Beltane Sunset to Sunset. April 30th – May 1st

Beltane honours Life. It represents the peak of Spring and the beginning of Summer. Earth energies are at their strongest and most active. All of life is bursting with potent fertility and at this point in the Wheel of the Year, the potential becomes conception. On May Eve the sexuality of life and the earth is at its peak. Abundant fertility, on all levels, is the central theme. The Maiden goddess has reached her fullness. She is the manifestation of growth and renewal, Flora, the Goddess of Spring, the May Queen, the May Bride. The Young Oak King, as Jack-In-The-Green, as the Green Man, falls in love with her and wins her hand. The union is consummated and the May Queen becomes pregnant. Together the May Queen and the May King are symbols of the Sacred Marriage (or Heiros Gamos), the union of Earth and Sky, and this union has merrily been re-enacted by humans throughout the centuries. For this is the night of the Greenwood Marriage. It is about sexuality and sensuality, passion, vitality and joy. And about conception. A brilliant moment in the Wheel of the Year to bring ideas, hopes and dreams into action. And have some fun…..

Traditions of Beltane

Beltane is a Fire Festival. The word ‘Beltane’ originates from the Celtic God ‘Bel’, meaning ‘the bright one’ and the Gaelic word ‘teine’ meaning fire. Together they make ‘Bright Fire’, or ‘Goodly Fire’ and traditionally bonfires were lit to honour the Sun and encourage the support of Bel and the Sun’s light to nurture the emerging future harvest and protect the community. Bel had to be won over through human effort. Traditionally all fires in the community were put out and a special fire was kindled for Beltane. “This was the Tein-eigen, the need fire. People jumped the fire to purify, cleanse and to bring fertility. Couples jumped the fire together to pledge themselves to each other. Cattle and other animals were driven through the smoke as a protection from disease and to bring fertility. At the end of the evening, the villagers would take some of the Teineigen to start their fires anew.” (From Sacred Celebrations by Glennie Kindred) Green Man – Beltane
